Why You Need a Windows Remote Desktop Terminal Server in The Cloud

Windows Remote Desktop Terminal Servers have long been relied upon by companies and individuals as a way to access a full windows desktop. It's commonly used by businesses who:

  • primarily run Mac OS X or Linux and do not wish to purchase more hardware and licenses
  • prefer not to administer an employee's personal computer
  • want to provide remote workers with access to applications, but do not provide laptops.
  • want to grant access to desktop applications which need more powerful computing resources than their employee workstations have available
  • rely on specialty applications that require Windows Terminal Server

Windows on EC2 History

Windows 2003 and 2008 servers have been available on Amazon Web Services since October 2008 and in December 2009 the product exited beta. Using the "Data Center" licensing scheme from Microsoft, only remote desktop service "CALs" or "ECLs" for authenticated web applications are required for Windows servers running on EC2. All other server licensing is covered by the hourly pay-as-you-go runtime charge.

Windows Remote Desktop Clients are freely available for Mac OS X and Linux and Remote Desktop has been built-in to the Windows operating system since Windows XP.
